Music @ Royal Hospital Chelsea
The Lark Ascending Concert
Recently voted Britain’s favourite piece of music, The Lark Ascending was written in 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War. It was first performed in 1921, when its composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams, lived in Chelsea’s Cheyne Walk.
The concert will also include a new arrangement of George Butterworth’s A Shropshire Lad, his folk tune suite The Banks of Green Willow and Samuel Barber’s popular Adagio for Strings, as well as songs by Frank Bridge and Gustav Holst.
The music will be interspersed by readings from Chelsea Pensioners, commemorating events from 100 years ago.
The evening will open with a complimentary glass of wine, soft drink or water in the spectacular Great Hall, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The concert starts at 7.30pm.
Siân Philipps is sponsored for the evening’s concert by the Zetland Foundation.
This event is supported by Masterpiece.
