Children at a herbal remedies workshop

Description

During the Crimean War, Mary Seacole used many herbal remedies to nurse soldiers back to health. Chelsea Physic Garden’s expert education team will talk you through some of the medicines that Seacole would have used on the battlefield.

Mustard plasters were a common method for healing wounds. Made from a poultice of mustard seed powder, spread inside a protective dressing, they helped warm muscle tissues and eased chronic aches and pains.

The workshop also gives you a chance to plant your own mustard seeds to take away and enjoy at home – you can even make your own medicines!
