Andrew Roberts

Celebrated historian Andrew Roberts and General Sir Richard Shirreff, who served as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, discuss the lives of nine titans of modern history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C Marshall, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D Eisenhower and Margaret Thatcher.

All nine leaders played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of conflicts involving their nation, from the French Revolutionary Wars to the Falklands. Each wished to succeed. But what qualities are needed to secure a victory?

By comparing the careers of these leaders, Roberts explores how their traits and techniques aligned and differed. Did they have something in common? Or was their war leadership unique?

Andrew Roberts is a Visiting Professor at the War Studies Department of King’s College, London and the Lehrman Institute Distinguished Lecturer at the New-York Historical Society. He is the author of several books, including Napoleon: A Life and Churchill: Walking with Destiny, which has been described as the best single-volume life of Churchill ever written.

A copy of Andrew Roberts' book Leadership in War can be purchased as part of a book and ticket offer for this event. Alternatively, copies will be available for purchase at the National Army Museum on the day of the event or via a link on the virtual event page.
