From Tite Street to Turks Row: A Second Blitz in Chelsea, July 1944

Join Dr Emily Mayhew on a tour of Chelsea to learn about the devastating impact that the second Blitz of 1944 had on the area.
Andrew Roberts

Description

Early in the Second World War, the population of Chelsea endured the horrors of the original Blitz which caused considerable damage, particularly along Chelsea riverside. A second bombing campaign in 1944 meant that the military and civilian populations of Chelsea were once again living with the deadly threat of bombing, this time from V1 and V2 rockets.

Join Dr Emily Mayhew of Imperial College London as she explores the impact that this second Blitz had on Chelsea. The walk culminates at the site of one of the worst single bombings of the entire war, whose effects were kept secret at the time for fear of affecting Allied morale. We'll discover the unique impact of the explosion itself, the extraordinary ways in which the event changed the lives of its survivors, and how it continues to influence scientific research into blast casualty today.

The tour will begin and end at the National Army Museum and will last approximately one hour.

The guide will be using the Vox Connect app to facilitate social distancing on this walking tour. We recommend that you download this in advance and bring headphones.
