Entangled Life

Description

Fungi support and sustain nearly all living systems on the planet. Mushrooms are only the tip of a large kingdom of organisms, many of which live out of sight. The hidden world of fungi includes some of the largest organisms on the planet that sprawl for miles underground, forming complex networks known as the ‘Wood Wide Web’.

Join Merlin Sheldrake as he brings to life the vital role of fungi. Merlin will be in conversation with writer and curator Francesca Gavin. Together, they will discuss how these organisms can change our minds, heal our bodies and help in the fight against environmental disaster. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms can fundamentally change our understanding of how life works.

Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist and a writer with a background in plant sciences, microbiology, ecology, and the history of science. He received a PhD in tropical ecology from Cambridge University for his work on underground fungal networks in the forests of Panama. Merlin is a keen brewer and fermenter, and is fascinated by the relationships that arise between humans and more-than-human organisms. Entangled Life is his first book.

Francesca Gavin is the author of six books, the editor of LIMBO magazine and a contributing editor at Twin, Good Trouble, Beauty Papers and Kaleidoscope. She was the co-curator of the Historical Exhibition of Manifesta11 and has curated exhibitions internationally, including Mushrooms: The Art, Design and Future of Fungi (Somserset House), The Dark Cube (Palais de Tokyo), E-Vapor-8 (Site Sheffield), and The New Psychedelia (MU).

A copy of Merlin Sheldrake's book Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds and Shape Our Future can be purchased as part of a book and ticket offer for this event. Alternatively, copies will be available for purchase via a link on the virtual event page on the day of the event.
