Join the Chelsea Pensioner pace-stick team, fresh from their World Championship debut, for a demonstration of this unique sport.
Pace sticks are a Roman invention, used as a device to map out straight roads. In a military context, The Royal Artillery claims to have deployed the pace stick first, using them to ensure correct distances between field guns during battle. Later, they were adopted throughout the British Army to mark the correct distances between troops on parade.
Today, teams from around the world compete in the All Arms International Pace Sticking Competition at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Each team is required to perform a set routine with military precision. Any incorrect words of command or movements result in the deduction of points.
